The Breeders’ debut studio album, “Pod,” was released by 4AD Records on May 29, 1990. Engineered by Steve Albini, the album showcases band leader Kim Deal on vocals and guitar, Josephine Wiggs on bass, Britt Walford on drums, and Tanya Donelly on guitar. Albini’s production prioritized capturing raw sound over technical perfection, favoring spontaneous live performances during recording sessions.

With anticipation heightened by Kim Deal’s involvement with the Pixies, “Pod” received critical acclaim and was well-received in Europe, reaching number 22 in the UK charts. Critics praised its dark and sexualized lyrics, drawing comparisons to the Pixies’ style. Notably, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana declared it as one of his favorite records. Pitchfork honored the album by ranking it as the 81st best album of the 1990s. The album’s cover art, designed by Vaughan Oliver, features a depiction of a man engaged in a fertility dance while adorned with a belt of eels.
